A decade ago, we were amazed that a computer could tell a cat from a dog, or spam from real mail. Today AI writes essays, draws pictures, and even proves theorems. What changed? Surprisingly little, at the level of the math: the models that recognize images and the ones that generate text are both neural networks, and every neural network is doing the same thing: function approximation. In this talk, we'll trace the major advances of the last decade, all the way to ChatGPT and image generation, through that single lens, and see why an idea that sounds so simple turned out to be so powerful. About the speaker:=0D=0A=
=0D=0A=
Luis Serrano did his undergraduate and masters in math at the University of Waterloo, his PhD in algebraic combinatorics at the University of Michigan, and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Quebec at Montreal. He then went to industry, working in AI at Google, Apple, in large language models at Cohere, and in quantum AI at Zapata Computing. He has taught courses in AI at platforms like Udacity and Coursera, and hosts the popular YouTube channel Serrano Academy with 200 thousand subscribers. He's also the author of the Amazon bestseller Grokking Machine Learning.=0D=0A=
