Professor David Owens, PhD MSc CEng FIET AFWES, is Head of Technical Trials at Virgin Media O2, where he leads external technology trials and innovation programmes in collaboration with the UK Government, start-ups, and academic institutions. He is also a Professor in Practice at the University of Glasgow's James Watt School of Engineering and has been a long-term supporter and contributor to the 5GIC, now the 6GIC at the University of Surrey.=0D=0A=

David has over 46 years of experience in the telecommunications industry, including more than three decades in mobile communications and over 20 years with O2 and Virgin Media O2. His career spans engineering design, network planning and optimisation, large-scale operations, and end-to-end system architecture. His technical expertise includes radio propagation and antennas, traffic modelling and strategy, customer experience measurement, coverage planning tools, and geographic information systems, with a particular interest in smartphone performance and real-world network behaviour.=0D=0A=

David currently heads the Virgin Media O2 Lab and has played a leading role in numerous government-funded innovation programmes, including DCMS and DSIT projects focused on advanced connectivity technologies, such as 5G New Thinking, 5G Worcester LEP, 5G AutoAir, 5G ENCODE, 5G VISTA, 5G ONE4HDD, 5G MoDE, and 5G DRIVE, for which he and his team were awarded Innovation of the Year at the 2025 Mobile Industry Awards. His work consistently bridges research and practice, ensuring that emerging technologies deliver tangible societal and commercial benefits.
