The imaging platform of Advanced Research at L'Oréal: Recent imaging developments and insights in skin and hair biology.
Abstract
The imaging platform uses different microscopy approaches to better understand the impact of cosmetic treatments on the structure and biology of human hair and skin. The skin is among our largest organs and defines the barrier that separates our body from the external world. This barrier function is in many cases essential for our health, for example it prevents harmful molecules such as pollutants to enter. In other cases, e.g. for the delivery of medical drugs it can be advantageous to decrease the skin barrier function locally for proper drug delivery as well as for cosmetic purposes. The quantification of this barrier function for the penetration of different raw materials, the examination of biological processes that lead to the proper structural formation of skin and its maintenance, as well as the biology behind skin aging are among the main tasks we address in the imaging platform. In addition, we want to better understand the biology behind hair growth and the biochemistry of the formed, keratinized hair fiber, especially related to hair coloration and hair care products. To give structural and mechanistic insight in those questions we use different imaging techniques such as electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, multiphoton-FLIM and RAMAN spectroscopy.
About the speaker
Dr Thomas Bornschlögl earned his PhD degree 2008 in physics at the Technical University of Munich in the field of single-molecule force spectroscopy, where he investigated the mechanics of specific protein structures using atomic force microscopy. He then conducted research at the Institut Curie in Paris, focusing on the mechanics and dynamics of the cytoskeleton of cells combining confocal microscopy with optical tweezers. Since 2016 he has been leading the imaging platform of L'Oréal's advanced research facility in Paris.
