Two Perspectives on Clinical LLMs: Source Fidelity and Cultural Adaptation

Centre for Human-Centred Computing

Date: 14 October 2026   Time: 13:00 - 14:00

Location: Room GC114, Graduate Centre. Mile End

Julia Ive from UCL will talk about her recent work with ClinicalLLMs. Julia has a strong connection to QMUL. Before she moved to UCL as an associate professor, she was a lecturer here at QMUL and the host of the CogSci seminars for many years. It is our great pleasure to have her back at the CogSci seminar as a speaker this time.

Abstract:
This presentation brings together findings from our recent research on two complementary aspects of clinical LLM use: preserving clinical information through direct extraction and copying, and adapting LLM-generated communication to different cultural contexts. Drawing on our SafeLLM pilot, we will show how retrieving relevant lines from approved UCL hospital protocols can offer a safer mode of using LLMs. We will also present our research on culturally adapted, LLM-assisted mental-health assistance, examining how AI can help account for cultural, religious and socioeconomic contexts.
