Natural Language Processing
Humans naturally express meaning via language - we use text to represent information in all sorts of forms, and speak to each other for all sorts of reasons, from performing specific tasks to just passing the time of day.
Our work in natural language processing (aka computational linguistics) is correspondingly wide-ranging: we work on practical models that perform tasks like detecting and flagging hate speech and misinformation; on theoretical models to help understand the nature of human language; on methods to help understand people’s state of mind, diagnose health conditions such as depression and dementia, and track their treatment progress; and on dialogue systems and virtual characters that can interact with humans in a natural way.
