Professor Joshua Reiss, Professor of Audio Engineering in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science has been awarded a prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair.

Professor Reiss is one of five leading engineers selected for a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair or Senior Research Fellowship. Funded by the UK Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, the scheme supports engineering academics to lead ambitious, applied research in collaboration with industry partners.

As part of the award, Professor Reiss will work with Yamaha to investigate and deliver intelligent systems for sound engineering. Based on cutting-edge advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning, the research will develop intelligent tools that enhance the quality, creativity and productivity of sound production.

The Royal Academy of Engineering's Research Chairs and Senior Research Fellowships programme enables researchers to build world-leading research groups focused on translating engineering research into real-world impact through industry-academia collaboration.

Professor Reiss joins a cohort of awardees working on a diverse range of challenges, including healthcare robotics, ceramic fibre manufacturing, graphene quantum electronics and climate-resilient infrastructure.

The announcement recognises the strength of research taking place within EECS and Queen Mary's continued contribution to innovation at the intersection of engineering, artificial intelligence and sound technology.
