Synthetic, photochemical, and photodynamic therapy adventures with pyrroles and BODIPYs
Synthetic chemistry involving pyrroles is challenging courtesy of electron-rich aromaticity and the propensity to oxidise or polymerise. BODIPYs incorporate two pyrrole units – double the fun, and double the challenge! Harnessing the chemistry of the pyrrolic motif leads to dipyrrolic structures that exhibit desirable properties as ligands and as photoactive species useful in chemical biology sensing/staining, photodynamic therapy and energy harvesting. This research seminar will include discussion of new strategies by which to functionalise pyrroles en route to BODIPYs appended with chalcogenophenes, including tellurophene.
