Together with colleagues from the UK and India, Rainer Klages, Reader in Applied Mathematics in the Centre for Complex Systems, has successfully applied to organise a workshop at the École de Physique des Houches in the French Alps. The event is funded by the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation, a private German foundation supporting research and education in physics, with a budget of €56,650 for 70 participants. The prestigious Les Houches workshops bring together researchers at all career stages for a week of talks and discussions to share recent results and start new collaborations.

The workshop "Frontiers of search in heterogeneous environments: From Markovian to Non-Markovian dynamics" will take place from 29 August to 3 September 2027. Modern tracking methods can follow the motion of animals, cells and tiny tracers in great detail. These data show that classical assumptions about search processes, such as how long it takes to reach a target for the first time, often fail when the motion has memory or the environment is heterogeneous. The workshop will address these questions with new data, tools and techniques. Masters and PhD students, postdocs and faculty working in related fields can apply until 30 April 2027 via the workshop website.
