Centre for Chemical ResearchTitle: PHOTOCATALYSIS – A TOOL FOR ASSEMBLING C-C AND C-X BONDS
Abstract:
This lecture will highlight advanced photochemical methodologies for C–C bond formation - as well as C–X bond construction,[1],[2] with a particular emphasis on amination and carboxylation reactions that enable access to valuable compounds beyond the reach of conventional approaches. In addition to established photocatalytic systems, special attention will be devoted to cobalt-based catalysis.[3] Selected examples will demonstrate how vitamin B₁₂ and related cobalt complexes can complement and expand the capabilities of traditional photocatalysis in radical-mediated couplings, functionalizations, and late-stage modifications of structurally complex molecules. Notably, our recent findings show that these visible-light-driven transformations can be efficiently conducted in aqueous media,[4] opening new opportunities at the interface of photocatalysis, green chemistry, and biocatalysis.
Our work expands the chemical space related to both photocatalysis and the aqueous micellar environment, opening access to a new research area at the intersection of photocatalysis and biocatalysis fields.
