Researchers from the Faculty of Science and Engineering have been recognised for authoring multiple highly cited papers which rank in the top 1% by citations in their field for 2024. The Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers list celebrates researchers who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their field(s) of research and represent one in a thousand of the world's scientists and social scientists. The preliminary list of top citations goes through a rigorous evaluation process based on research integrity, collaboration and other factors before the final positions are awarded.

This year's Highly Cited Researchers are:

1. Dr Maged Elkashlan, Senior Lecturer in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science
2. Professor Yuanwei Liu, Principal Investigator of the STAR laboratory and a Senior Lecturer in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science
3. Professor Arumugam Nallanathan, Professor of Wireless Communications, Head of Communication Systems Research Group

Professor Arumugam Nallanathan commented: "As the Head of the Communication Systems Research (CSR) group at Queen Mary University of London, I am immensely proud to witness the continuous recognition of our researchers' contributions. Three of our CSR group members have been consistently included in the prestigious list of highly cited researchers, and our Telecommunications engineering research has maintained its top-three position in the UK for the past four consecutive years in the Shanghai ranking. These recognitions truly reflect world-leading research in Telecommunications at our university."

This achievement highlights Queen Mary's contribution to the UK's strong presence on the list, with 563 researchers recognised nationally, representing 8.2% of the global total and securing the UK's position as the third-ranking country. In a competitive landscape dominated by the U.S. and China, Queen Mary's inclusion reflects the exceptional quality and impact of our research across disciplines – we have recently been ranked 24th in the world for the quality of our research with 92% of our research assessed as internationally excellent or world-leading. These results underscore our role in shaping the future of science and innovation on a global scale.
