Queen Mary University of London is proud to announce that Professor Yang Hao, Professor of Antennas and Electromagnetics in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, has been awarded the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) Booker Gold Medal—one of the organisation's highest honours.

Professor Hao receives the award with the official citation:
"For pioneering contributions to metamaterials, antennas, and intelligent wireless systems, translating fundamental electromagnetics into transformative technologies that have advanced satellite communications, body-centric networks, and next-generation radio systems."

This global honour was formally announced at the Opening Ceremony of the URSI General Assembly and Scientific Symposium in Krakow, Poland, on Sunday 16 August.

About the Booker Gold Medal

First awarded in 2002, the URSI Booker Gold Medal recognises outstanding work in telecommunications or a related science. It is named in honour of Professor Henry Booker, a seminal figure in radio science and a long‑standing contributor to URSI.

Celebrating Professor Hao's achievement

Professor Hao is internationally recognised for his pioneering research in antennas, metamaterials, and intelligent radio systems. His work bridges fundamental electromagnetics with practical engineering, enabling breakthroughs in areas such as:

advanced satellite communications,

body‑centric networks for healthcare and wearable technologies, and

next‑generation radio systems underpinning future connectivity infrastructures.

His leadership and research excellence have significantly shaped the field of radio science and cemented Queen Mary University of London's standing at the forefront of wireless innovation.
