In the UK’s 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), Queen Mary was ranked joint 7th in the UK for the quality of its research. In the augural Knowledge Exchange Framework published by Research England, Queen Mary was placed in the top 10 per cent of all English universities for ‘research partnerships’ and ‘public and community engagement’, in the top 20 per cent for ‘IP and commercialisation’, and in the top 30 per cent for ‘working with business’ and the ‘working with the public and third sectors’.

The Faculty of Science and Engineering is committed to excellence in research and innovation, and to delivering an exceptional education and student experience across all of our disciplines.  

The Faculty’s research profile is on a rapid upward trajectory. Our research income has more than doubled over the last two years continues and our performance in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021) was excellent. Our research is recognised all over the world with 97 per cent of science and engineering research output rated as internationally excellent with strong performances in all units of assessment, including Engineering (ranked 2nd in the UK for outputs and 7th overall) and Computer Science and Informatics (ranked 1st in the UK for impact and 8th overall).  

We are collaborative, welcoming, and proud of our achievements, and ambitious to establish Queen Mary as one of the leading institutions for science and engineering in the World. 

Within the Faculty we have over 60 independent fellowship holders funded by UKRI, ERC, Royal Society, Royal Academy of Engineering and Leverhulme Trust and many large collaborative grants. 

The Faculty invests significant funding in research facilities, equipment and PhD students supporting our research staff. We have a thriving population of over 900 PhD students including various Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs), Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs) and EU Innovative Training Networks. The University has recently invested approximately £200M in capital infrastructure including:  

  • £33m refurbishment of our Engineering building and research labs  
  • £17.9m refurbishment of the Mathematical Sciences building  
  • £3m refurbishment of research facilities in Physics and Astronomy  
  • £11.6m for refurbishment and new facilities in Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Psychology  
  • £5.7m investment in IT and computing laboratories and research infrastructure
